Bryel Day Hunt

As the years go by, the month of September is one that I would rather skip but because that is out of my control, the healthier coping strategies that the Mlinars’ have developed over the years are continuously improving.  For those joining A Hunter’s Wife’s Blog, please, feel free to catch up by reading a previous posted blog at http://ahunterswifesblog.blogspot.com/2011/09/we-interrupt-this-hunting-season-to.html.
Prior to not spending Bryel Day with me and the girls, Jimmie had asked if it would be okay for him to spend bow season with Barney, hunting.  Of course, I know what hunting and being out in God’s church means to him.  Besides, we would be celebrating that weekend in Estes Park.  So, as we have for the past 12 years, the girls and I celebrated Bryel Day by releasing balloons and laying flowers:

 Celebrating Bryel Day

While Jimmie and Barney experienced two eventful weeks hunting.  The first week, they walked up and down mountains bugling in elk.  Barney complained to Jimmie about the cold camper he was staying in and Jimmie attempted to catch every field mouse in the woods!  I was so glad that they decided to come home for the weekend.  Plus, I think the girls were glad Mommy was preoccupied by Daddy being home and had taken the weekend off from waking them both up with my morning singing.  Additionally, I missed my Jimmie.  Then Sunday evening, the guys returned to the mountains for some more hunting.
On Bryel Day (September 18), as usual, Jimmie and Barney were up early.  Barney decided to walk more up the mountain while Jimmie stayed behind to bugle and patiently wait.  Their strategy so paid off!
Successful Hunt on Bryel Day

As a result of the successful hunting trip on Bryel Day, this year will mark the 2nd anniversary that Barney and Jimmie will be dressed in camo, walking around the mountains to hunt.  They also will be accompanied by the newest member of the hunting party, The Great Gazoo.  Hopefully, Bryel will assist you all by pushing the great Wapiti to you-Happy Hunting!!

Hunting Camp is Beginning to Expand

Home improvement projects are like any other speed bump that may happen in life.  They seem to occur at the most inconvenient times.  For instance, during the era that our home was built, building specifications were not what they are today; particularly specifications for what type of pipe will be used for sewer lines!  Additionally, it is not really recommended to build or to replace anything in the State of Wyoming during the winter month of February due to the  depth of frozen ground which makes digging difficult when replacing a sewer line.  Yet, using a backhoe and having a few volunteering buddies from work to dig up and then replace at least 20 feet of sewer pipe, the Mlinar’s can validate that winter and Mother Nature even in February is NOT impossible!  However, it is one heck of an all-around experience!
Sunday morning, a day to rest, reflect, and prepare for another week, or so we thought.   It isn’t until late afternoon that we notice that the water in the house is not draining correctly.  Jimmie, the hero, discovered that the sewer pipe busted….not a little, but completely collapsed.  Yea for us!  My childhood play-time with my older sister who played Mary as I was Laura Ingalls has now become reality!  Only I am an older version of Laura and my kids and hubby are also able to experience the play-time of “Little House on the Prairie” with me!  The Mlinar’s for a brief amount of time are experiencing what it would be like to live without any in-door plumbing but still enjoying the luxury of electricity.
An even brighter part of the experience is that at the time Jimmie actually installed, repaired, and/or replaced sewer lines so he knew exactly what needed to be done.  The sewer line is a total of 100 linear feet from our house to the main line and Jimmie was going to replace approximately 20 feet of it.  Friday of that week, he would take the day off.  Then, he was going to rent a backhoe and purchase the necessary items needed to repair the line.  Additionally, he had convinced a few buddies from work to assist him and bribe them for the day by feeding them and keeping them all hydrated.  Let’s get real, these are all men extremely excited to be able to get to play on a day outside of work in a backhoe digging in someone else’s backyard!  The food and hydration was only a bonus.  Plus, I never imagined that Jimmie would be gaining another hunting buddy besides Barney, especially one that during the repair ran over the girls swing set with the backhoe.  I am calling this hunting buddy, The Great Gazoo; he did seem to appear out of no-where!

A person would think that six (6) days is a long time to go without water and/or sewer in a home.  Actually, it was an eventful week filled with so many laughs.  A few that sticks out occurred while we were taking our family including our dogs to the facilities before bed.  Our Chihuahua completely missed the entrance to the door and ran into the glass window on the side   His poor little face had imprinted the window leaving smudge marks which still remains to this day.  Then, as members of the local YMCA, we utilized the facilities for showers.  After the first visit to the YMCA, Jimmie became quizzical as to why the girls and I had wet swimsuits because we didn’t go swimming.  So, I explained to him that the girls and I are not big on community showers, which resulted in the wet suits.  Apparently, Jimmie missed the memo regarding take your swimsuit to keep wandering eyes away and as a result had experienced fear he would drop the soap while showering.  Though, after the first showering event, Jimmie NEVER forgot his swimsuit again!  Poor Jimmie!
Fred, Barney, and The Great Gazoo-this should be one heck of a hunting crew.  Stay tuned for the next adventure!

Two Sides to Every Story!

There are always two sides to every story.  Below is the way I saw the events of what had happened while camping:

This year has been so busy and the winter months seemed to have drug on into the middle of May.  Thus, on Father’s Day weekend, the Mlinar clan was finally able to go camping.  Awww-the beauty is something which feels as if it is the first time discovering the various locations away from the hustle and bustle of city life.  Now, I know some of my readers live in cities that are the size of the entire State of Wyoming and then some, but for a Wyoming girl, 63,000 people in one location is too many!  So our camping trip was much needed to re-energize the Mlinars’.  While camping, we decided to see if we could spot any moose near Lake Owen, which sets west of beautiful Centennial, Wyoming.  I’d love to report we saw some but no.  Instead, we were able to observe a small family of foxes.  They are rather cute little things.  We were able to observe them interact with one another for quite some time.  They were curious and even posed for me some.  The baby kits even took a time-out to play a little tag with one another:

Ol’ little Stich is quite the protector.  While we were watching the baby kits, he was going to show the invaders who the boss was.   Apparently, he believes he is 9 foot tall with an attitude equally as big.  Not bad for a guy that weighs possibly 3 ½ pounds-soaking wet!  Soda on the other hand looked on, acting as though there was nothing there.  Apparently, he carried this behavior on at our camp as well.

Saturday morning, I was up at around 5 A.M. because I was hoping to spy a moose down by the river by our camp.  Plus, I thought I had heard something outside our camper fall.  I figured since I was up and I could not see a moose walking in the willows that I’d take the dogs out to go potty.  Then, I planned on slipping back into to bed until everyone else was up.  Well, it sort of happened that way.

Soda and I walked outside the camper.  I had Stitch in my arms and put him onto the ground.  This grey thing went running fast towards the direction of the creek.  I thought for a moment it was a coyote because it appeared to be similar in size.  None-the-less, it was gone.  Stitch and Soda didn’t even make a sound.  I am not sure they even noticed it.  I could have just been thinking I saw something too-it was early.  As Soda was sniffing around the fire pit, Stitch and I was walking a bit away from him.  All of a sudden, I notice two pointy ears pop up to the left of me.  Sort of made me nervous because I wasn’t sure what it was or if it would attack.  We were camping in the forest.  I attempted to throw a few sticks in the direction of the animal to scare it off.  Though, it didn’t budge…I turned looked at Soda, who was still sniffing around the fire pit, and Stitch was searching for a magical spot to conduct his b’sness.  Dang dogs weren’t even noticing or paying attention to what I was seeing.

After attempting to scare it off the second time with no luck, I decided I should return to the camper with both dogs.  I would have hated to explain to our kids what had happened to the dogs that morning.  Plus, I was a bit tired.  So, to the camper I went, but I decided to grab a pillow and a blanket to lie on the couch.  With any luck, I may be able to see a moose down by the river after a quick morning nap.

Suddenly, I woke for no apparent reason.  The camper still remained quiet.  I popped my head up to see if a moose was by the river yet.  To my dismay, I again spotted what I thought was a coyote rummaging through the fire pit….oh wow-that was no coyote, it was a fox-a big male fox.  I have never seen a fox that big before or that color.

I looked at Soda, who was fast asleep-still, and Stitch, who was also fast asleep.  These dang dogs-a wild animal not more than 50 yards or less from the camper making noise in the fire pit and neither one were moving.  I sprung from the couch and tapped Jimmie on the shoulder and pointed to the window.   So cool!  He informed me the fox was molting and that is why I thought it was a coyote at first.  An opportunity like this I did not hesitate to take a ton of pictures of him.  However, sadly, as a result of failure to notify us that there was something around our camper, I fired both Soda and Stitch from being the family protectors.

This is Soda and this is the way it REALLY occurred:

My name is Soda Gene and I was born somewhere between Soda Lake, Wyoming and an area I found my human aka Jimmie.  Although, I think Jimmie is somewhat deaf because I sat whining outside of the vehicle a good five minutes before he realized the sound was NOT coming from his little brother, who also occupied the area.  Though, I will vouch for Jimmie that he is a great guy.  The minute he opened the vehicle door that cold November afternoon, I knew I was going to remain warm the rest of my life.  It was an added bonus to get Mlinarized.  Apparently, my ribs were protruding a bit when I arrived to join the rest of the Mlinar clan in Cheyenne.  Momma Mlinar was not too impressed to be able to see my ribs.  I will get to her though in a bit.  At the moment, she is a little irritated with me.  Geesh, a dog can only do so much!

So there I was not even a year old and my collar had grown into my neck.  It was quite painful and I had some difficulty breathing at times.  I tried my best to get that thing off of me but was unsuccessful.  I have no idea what happened to make me live for so long in the wild outdoors of Sublette County but I am so thankful to my human, Jimmie.  While I was living as a free and wild spirit in Sublette County, I learned to build my own bed at night and learned how to be extremely quiet especially while hiding from those terrible wolves and rascally coyotes.  Man, those coyotes are really good at messing with a guy even one that is somewhat bigger than them!

The morning I discovered my human, I had heard something moving that didn’t sound like the typical coyote or wolf.  So, I followed the noise and found this odd looking brown thing.  I was not too sure what it was but I could see two figures in there.  So, I began to talk with it.  I yelped a few times, explained my case, and to no prevail was unsuccessful talking with the human I could see through the clearing.  Thus, I began to whine my case even louder.  This time, the human opened the door.  I am pretty sure he saw me so I jumped in as he got out.  The room was so warm, small but warm, and it smelt very good.  I won’t lie, I was a bit hungry.  Deer and elk gut piles and field mice are sporadic finds in winter months.  Plus, those dang rabbits are really fast!

The other human, who answered to Matt, he was eating something that smelt way better than what I had been devouring.  Though, I did not want to make eye contact with Matt or even Jimmie.  After jumping in the warm room and sitting between the humans, I stared straight forward.  There was no way I would leave these two by themselves in the wilds.  I don’t think they would have survived especially when the hunting was as slim as it is during the brutal winter months of the area.  Funny thing is, as we were driving east, every-once-in-awhile, my belly began to rumble and to explode.  I giggled to myself because Jimmie was blaming Matt for the odor that I was producing.  Heeheee-ironically, both humans stuck their heads out the window as if they were dogs.  Oh man, what a sight.

For roughly an hour and fifteen minute we rode in that warm room and stopped briefly at destination that I had never been before.  We met up with more humans and then Jimmie and I headed even further east.  This was quite the journey for me and the nice thing was that I didn’t have to walk.  I sat where Matt had sat in the warm room, riding to a final destination three maybe four hours later.  At this location, we were met by another big human aka Momma Human and two miniature humans.  The two miniature humans were just a bit bigger than me.  Though, it was Momma Human that fed me some great grub and took me for walks around a lake where I could chase geese, ducks, squirrels, and pounce on mice.  Momma Human didn’t get mad and fire me until one particular camping trip.

Hey, a guy can’t be perfect all the time.  It appears that as I have aged, I am unable to smell certain things like I use to.  Plus, I hardly ran into those red smaller creatures that Momma Human referred to as a fox.  Apparently, she is mad that I was unable to smell the fox when it was searching through our fire pit when she and that little squirrel that I cannot eat but Momma Human refers to as Stitch the Chihuahua.  Momma Human and he were out sniffing for a magical spot.  Geesh, all the smells in the air and that is what she wanted me to chase.  You’d think a human would be happy that I noticed it enough to run it out of our camp!  Plus, it was fast like those pesky rabbits!  Oh no, Momma Human was not buying it.  I think it is because I am yellow and not small like that little needy squirrel that I cannot eat but who is constantly mooching off of her.  She and I go back into my camper and she tells me I am fired!  Whatever the heck that means?!  All I got to say is that I better still get my bones and especially the table scraps.  Otherwise, I am going to BBQ me a squirrel that I cannot eat!!
Doesn't the squirrel that I cannot eat look delicious?  Add a little ketchup...

The Young Rebel!

Our oldest daughter took a political stance for the importance of our Second Amendment. A teacher she was anticipating to argue against the Amendment commented to her, "I like it when kids wear t-shirts that has meaning to it and to them." Jim posted the picture on one of his many forums/chats and many of the guys told him that he, Bailey, and I should accept whatever consequences may come with her wearing it to school i.e. suspension etc. It is with great pleasure to report that all turned out well-nothing happened and NO dress codes were broken with the wearing of the shirt. Political stance was uneventful and was successful!

If you'd like to also join in with the political stance for the 2nd Amendment, we purchased the t-shirt at http://mysocialtees.com/

Arrow Hunting

After being with my hubby for so many years, a person would think that I would completely understand and interpret all of my hubby’s antics.  Though, there is NEVER a dull moment for me or our girls.  For example, the word “arrow hunting” does not mean the same for me as it does for my husband.  Heck, I was a past member of the Girls Scouts in addition my mom was an active volunteer for both Boys Scouts and Girls Scouts.  As a young girl, I accompanied the Boy Scouts in an arrow hunt so I am extremely aware of what arrow hunting is and what arrow hunting involves.  I know I have previously explained what a GREAT listener I am when my husband speaks to me and I NEVER part-take in the activity of selective hearing-EVER.  If you don’t believe me, I challenge you to read my previous blogs.  Thus, I KNOW I heard him when he stated let’s do some arrow “head” hunting when we are up camping this weekend NOT let’s take our bows up camping!  I know I didn’t add any words that I did not hear!
SAWEET-I haven’t been arrow “head” hunting for many years.  No, I didn’t find this statement out of character for my husband either AND I didn’t think twice when he packed mine and the girls’ bows out to the camper.  In my mind, I was thinking, searching for some historical Native American artifacts with visions of the following:

Every summer we spend one camping trip with Nani and Papa.  Our camping trips with them encompass days filled with uncontrollable laughing due to the combination of Jimmie, his Dad, mixed in with our youngest daughter; develops a misguided land hurricane!  Papa and our youngest have extremely wild imaginations, and enjoy discussing their days with Sacajawea as they all travelled down the river hunting wild buffalo.  Oh and it doesn’t stop there, our oldest, the moral compass, encourages them both by asking question after question just to see what they will response with!  Needless to say, our trips together are MOST extraordinary.
After setting up camp, I was excited to go arrow “head” hunting.  Damn, I have GOT to quit listening to Taylor Swift and singing along with her!  Apparently, this camping trip, Jimmie wanted to gain additional experience with his bow since he and Barney were anticipating participating in the upcoming archery season.  There would be NO arrow “head” hunting the way I was foreseeing.  We, Jimmie and I, decided to have a small competition between us to see who could shoot the best with our bows.  Of course, I won the competition; he was no competition (my story)!  Haahaaha…the last leg of the competition, I am in the lead.  Jimmie draws back; focuses through the peep–site holds his breath a bit; and releases.  I believe that he was scared of me winning, which resulted in-NOTHING BUT AIR!!  AWWWW!  I would have been way happier had we arrow ”head” hunted the way I was thinking rather than spending three plus hours arrow hunting, Jimmie style!
This particular arrow hunt saved us money because Jimmie didn’t have to explain to our elderly neighbors about the ferocious man-eating tire!  Plus, my child-like attention span, allowed me to discover-WILD STRAWBERRIES!!  YES!!
I am positive that Jimmie purposely lost his arrow and placed the wild strawberries in my view in an attempt to bust my concentration.  I am positive this was his intentions because he thinks if we would have finished our friendly competition with me winning that I would constantly remind him-HE LOST!!  Nenner-nenner…I mean, if any one happens to be in the Medicine Bow National Forrest this coming summer and you find an almost brand new arrow, please, let us know!  Feel free to leave me a message on the blog.

Preparation Has Paid Off

After many months of MUCH anticipated waiting and preparation for the day the taxidermist was to call has now come!  Recognizing the infamous number, my husband got the BIGGEST smile, even the Joker couldn’t grin like he did.  Of course, I am not going to tell Jimmie that I was also excited and after viewing the finished product I got one word:      W O W!!  Our taxidermist, David Hrabovsky owner of Western Wildlife Creations [(307) 778-2051 on 5960 Klipstein Road in Cheyenne, WY 82009, military discount available] did an amazing job.  No wonder his studio is full of “Best in Show” ribbons hanging from a variety of his work.  We highly suggest you to stop by his studio to view his artwork for yourself, breath-taking.  A big thank you to Barney for helping Jimmie bring in the precious elk mount which meant I could be the acting supervisor!
Final Product
P.S.  In case you have forgotten-it IS OFFICIALLY Hunting Season!!  Yes, I am slow these past few months BUT I will have some GREAT material for you all too read-stay tuned!! :)

Here Fishy Fishy

My husband wanted to go to the spot where he took our oldest daughter to harvest her first elk and perform a needle in the haystack search for the remains, if any, of the casing from the bullet.  What an awesome Daddy, he is…I totally agreed-what a great opportunity to be outside enjoying the beautiful Wyoming summer; do some fishing; and checkout any wildflowers that managed to pop up, while searching for the prize remains.
We hopped into our truck and took a long scenic route with high hopes of spotting a moose along the way.  Okay, I was hoping we’d spot one.  Jimmie was hoping we’d see some elk; neither of us seen either one of our wish list creatures!  DANG!  However, I have my suspicions as to why Jimmie really wanted to take the short trip out-only the two (2) of us-while our girls were busy…
When we finally arrived at the secret hunting grounds, Jimmie quickly took off walking in the direction where our oldest daughter had shot her elk, but he forgot to share the directional information with me, which he usually never forgets to inform me of where we are going.  I am certain of this because I was totally listening to him the entire time while I was singing along to Taylor Swift on the radio (or was it in my head…not sure…oh crap was that out-loud)…no, I do not have selective hearing!  Of course, when we finally did get out of the car to search, there were so many butterflies and bees on steroids flying around not to mention some wildflowers and other amazing portraits in God’s outdoors-they ALL distracted my child-like attention span!  No, no, that can’t be it either.  Ya know, I am truly lucky I didn’t get lost during our search.  We had been in the truck at least a few hours…I think I had been in the vehicle way too long.  This is why I was not a lot of help to my husband and had become so distracted during our search for the casing.  Yep, that is my story!  J
In spite of my lacking participation, I did manage to take lots of pictures to assist me in case I were to…hum…get lost; I would be able to retrace the ground I covered…
Bees on steroids enjoying Low Larkspur (Delphinium bicolor)

Pretty butterflies on top of Cow Parsnip (Heracleum sphondylium)
Ohhh, even prettier butterfly on top of Cow Parsnip (Heracleum sphondylium)

Yet, as our trip continued, I am changing my original claim for why Jimmie really wanted to take the short trip out-only the two (2) of us-while our girls were busy.  Come to think of it, I am re-examining the entire day’s events.  My new suspicion is:  Jimmie is trying to get rid of me!
Here are the events that took place.  After lunch, we stopped at an undisclosed fishing location sharing the spot with another fishing buddy(ies).  I walked across the “bridge” and began to prepare to do some fishing.
Company’s lodge
All of a sudden, out of nowhere, I am certain that Jimmie released JAWS into the pond!!  Here is what I saw while standing on the “bridge” of darkness:

Here is what Jimmie captured:
My spot while fishing
Holy schnikies!
That dang “fish” waited until I had almost reeled in my line to attack the worm that was seductively dancing on the hook.  It was the craziest occurrence I had ever encountered in all my few years of fishing experience!  Jimmie “claimed” it was a fish, but I still feel very lucky that he was unsuccessful with what could have been a bad end result, after releasing JAWS into the pond!!  Though, I am NOT taking any chances…in case I do go missing on our next escapade when he suggests only the two (2) of us again go out, please, note the area in the picture below where we could possibly be and feel free to pass it onto the authorities!
